What Is Oversleeping?
People always talk about how it is unhealthy to not sleep properly. However, many people don’t know that it is also unhealthy to sleep too much. There are many harmful effects of oversleeping on the body. It makes a person feel tired all day long. The circadian rhythms in body are disturbed. It can lead to depression, weight gain and insomnia.
Every person needs an average sleep of 6-8 hours every night. However, it can vary from person to person. Some may sleep 4-6 hours or 7-9 hours. Sometimes people need to sleep for a longer period of time. Such as after traveling, workout hour or illness. This extra or longer sleep is not oversleeping. Oversleeping is actually when a person sleeps than usual in routine such as sleeping 12-14 hours every night. Thus, this regular oversleeping can be the symptom of an underlying health issue that needs to be checked.
There are some issues that might be making you oversleep
Too much sleeping can be the symptom as well as risk factor for depression. Too much sleeping can be the symptom of depression. The research studies shows that sleep disorders can cause depression. These sleep disorders includes insomnia, narcolepsy and circadian rhythm disorders.
Sleeping too much (hypersomnia) or insomnia develops when a person have depression. This can be due to the disturbed sleep cycle also. However the cause is not clear.
Obstructive sleep apnea
In this condition, people stop breathing for a short period of time while sleeping. It can disturb the sleep cycle because this condition occurs many times during night. a person wakes up whenever this happens causing sleep disturbance. This can keep a person tired during the day. a person tries to sleep excessively during the day. Memory issues, concentration issues, headaches, dry mouth, excessive urination and low libido are all the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.
This is a physical condition in which the thyroid is underactive which can cause a person feeling sleepy all the time. even if the person slept properly at night for 6-8 hours. This can cause oversleeping. People with this condition feel the need to go back to sleep or sleep during the day whenever they can.
In this sleep disorder, a person feels excessive need to sleep the whole day. Even taking a nap doesn’t make this sleepiness go away. some other sleeping issues can be caused by narcolepsy.
The condition in which there is no underlying cause of oversleeping. The doctors do not find any cause for the oversleeping. Even after the proper diagnosis, they fail to identify any cause for this oversleeping.
Oversleeping can be the side effect of your medications. In this case, the patient should consult with the doctor to change or decrease the dosage of medicines so that it will be easier for you to cope with oversleeping.

- Research shows that oversleeping decreases the levels of serotonin in brain causing migraines.
- Pain in back, neck or shoulder often begins in oversleeping.
What can you do to prevent it?
Oversleeping becomes a habit and can cause many health issues. Thus, it is important to break this unhealthy habit and bring your proper sleeping pattern in routine.
There are few tips to do this
When you take too many naps during day, you become habitual of sleeping too much. Thus it is important to avoid naps so that you can sleep properly at night.
Set the alarm regularly same time each day. Even on weekends. This can help you to train your mind to wake up at a single time each day. This will make you maintain a proper sleep pattern.
Think like there is no snooze button. So you can get up at the single alarm and save yourself from going back to sleep again.
All the lights should be avoided near bedtime especially mobile phones or other electronic devices. This for the reason that these devices have wavelengths of lights take keeps brain working. You also may want to just see the last scene, last post or anything on the phone that can keeps you awake longer. Thus it is important to avoid all these devices near your bedtime so you can sleep properly.
Keep a sleep journal. It will help you to keep track of your sleep cycle. Such as the time you go to bed and the time you wake up. This will help you to get back to your sleeping pattern if you see any disruption and changes in it. You can help your doctor to make the diagnosis easier by keeping a sleep journal.
Be mindful of your habits
Do not take caffeine near bedtime because it can keep you awake even when you want to sleep. Although alcohol make you sleepy. Try to avoid it because it can disrupt the quality of sleep. You can take milk or tea.
Oversleeping is not an issue if it happens sometimes. It is completely normal if you are habitual of oversleeping on Sunday mornings. The problem begins when you start oversleeping on a regular basis. You should see a doctor when you see other symptoms besides oversleeping that can be the cause of some underlying health problem. Keep a check of your sleeping pattern and try to maintain it.
